This dirt cake is SO creamy and delicious, with layers of chocolate cookie crumbs and a smooth, fluffy vanilla pudding filling. It’s rich, perfectly sweet, and ridiculously easy to make. Plus, it gets even BETTER after chilling in the fridge!

What is a Dirt Cake?!
If you’ve never heard of a dirt cake before, you might be wondering why someone would call a delicious, creamy dessert a dirt cake (which probably doesn’t sound very appealing!). It’s actually a fun, no-bake dessert made with layers of crushed chocolate cookies and a smooth, fluffy vanilla pudding filling. It’s usually topped with gummy worms (or gummy snakes in my case) to give it that classic dirt-like appearance, making it especially fun for kids and parties!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
SO creamy and fluffy: The combination of vanilla pudding, cream cheese, and whipped cream (no Cool Whip in this recipe!) makes the filling rich, smooth, and light.
Easy to make: No baking required! Just prepare the layers, assemble, and let the fridge do the rest.
Perfect for making ahead: This dirt cake needs at least 8 hours to chill, making it a great dessert to prepare the day before.
That classic dirt cake look: Layers of chocolate cookie crumbs and creamy filling, finished with gummy worms for a fun touch!
Perfect for sharing: Serve it straight from the trifle dish for birthday parties, themed parties, family gatherings, or whenever you’re craving something sweet.
Developing This Recipe
When developing this dirt cake recipe, I first tried making it in a 9×13-inch pan with two layers of chocolate cookie crumbs and one thick layer of pudding in the middle. While it tasted great, it didn’t look particularly exciting, and it was tricky to get nice, clean slices.
After doing some research around the different ways dirt cake can be served, I decided to use a trifle dish instead. I LOVED how the layers looked through the glass! It made the dessert look so much more beautiful and impressive while keeping that fun, classic dirt cake look.
I also wanted to use fresh heavy cream rather than Cool Whip, which isn’t readily available here in New Zealand. Since freshly whipped cream doesn’t hold its shape as firmly, I made sure the vanilla pudding was thick enough to help the filling set into nice, thick layers. The result was a creamy, fluffy dirt cake that’s delicious without being overly sweet. YUMMM!
How to Make Dirt Cake
You can find the full list of ingredients for this dirt cake recipe in the recipe card at the end of the blog post (for easy navigation, hit the ‘jump to recipe’ button at the top of the blog post). Here is just a quick visual breakdown of the recipe (recipe video is also provided in the recipe card below).
Add the cookies and cream biscuits to a food processor and pulse until coarsely crushed, leaving some larger pieces throughout for texture. Alternatively, place the biscuits in a large resealable bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Set the cookie crumbs aside.

To make the pudding layer, add the instant pudding mix and cold milk to a large mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer, mix for 2 minutes until the pudding has thickened. Set aside.
In a medium bowl, add the room-temperature cream cheese and butter. Using a hand mixer, beat until smooth and creamy.
Add the powdered sugar and beat for another minute until smooth and well combined. Set aside.

In a separate medium bowl, combine the cold heavy cream and vanilla. Using a hand or stand mixer, whip until stiff peaks just form, being careful not to overwhip the cream.
Add the whipped cream to the cream cheese mixture and gently fold together using a spatula until combined. Be gentle to keep the mixture light and fluffy.

Add the cream cheese and whipped cream mixture to the pudding and gently fold with a spatula until smooth and fully combined.

To assemble, use a standard 8-inch (20 cm) trifle dish. Spread one-third of the pudding mixture evenly over the bottom of the dish, followed by one-third of the cookie crumbs.
Repeat the layers with another third of the pudding mixture and cookie crumbs, then finish with the remaining pudding mixture and cookie crumbs on top.

Cover the dish with cling wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the cookie crumbs to soften slightly and the flavors to come together.

Just before serving, decorate with gummy worms or gummy snakes. I also like to place some extra cookies on top. Serve chilled.

How to Store Dirt Cake
Refrigerator: Cover the dirt cake tightly and store it in the fridge. Keep it refrigerated until ready to serve. For the best texture, enjoy it within 48 hours.
Make ahead: This dessert is perfect for making ahead! Prepare it the day before and refrigerate overnight so the layers have time to set and the cookie crumbs soften slightly.
Freezing: I haven’t tested freezing this recipe, but I probably wouldn’t recommend it. The cookies may become soggy as they thaw, and the creamy filling may become watery or lose its smooth texture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make dirt cake the day before?
Absolutely! I actually recommend making it the day before. Chilling it overnight gives the cookie crumbs time to soften slightly and allows the flavors to come together.
Can I make this dirt cake recipe without a food processor?
Yes! Place the cookies in a large resealable bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Try to leave some larger pieces throughout rather than crushing everything into a fine powder.
Why does my pudding filling have lumps?
Make sure your cream cheese and butter are at room temperature before beating them together. Beat until completely smooth before adding the powdered sugar. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mixture to keep the filling light and fluffy.
Can I use homemade vanilla pudding instead of instant pudding mix?
I haven’t tested this recipe with homemade pudding, so I can’t recommend a direct substitution. The recipe was developed using instant vanilla pudding mix, but if your homemade pudding sets nice and thick, it will probably work!
Can I use a different dish?
Yes, you can use another dish with enough room for the three layers of pudding and cookie crumbs. An 8-inch (20 cm) trifle dish is what I use for this recipe, but you could also use a larger, flatter dish and have less layers.
